Upgraded Monitoring Capabilities of Protected Areas | CBCGDF CCAfa
In recent years, as people's awareness of biodiversity protection has risen, people found it difficult to achieve a balance between social development and nature conservation. Among them, the most concerning is the relationship between birds and transmission lines. we know that tall towers and dense aerial wire networks crowd out the activity space of birds, but also provide space for some birds to stay and build nests simultaneously.
However, when these birds build nests and move around on high-voltage transmission towers, they may threaten their safety, besides, the safe and stable operation of the transmission lines due to defecation and collision with power lines.
To ensure the safety of these birds and transmission lines, and at the same time enhance the local public's understanding of birds, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and some provinces of the State Grid With the joint promotion of municipal companies, CBCGDF protected areas with specific species as protection targets have been established in Gaoyou, Jiangsu, Chizhou, Anhui and other places.
To observe and study the living habits and activity patterns of birds around transmission line towers, the above-protected areas have put forward the need to install cloud real-time monitoring. After review by the CBCGDF Biological Rescue and Science Ethics Working Group, all have been successfully installed and implemented online monitoring.
In May 2023, the Gaoyou Oriental White Stork Sanctuary not only completely monitored and protected the entire process of nesting and raising chicks on the local high-voltage power line tower, but also rarely monitored the phenomenon of supplementary breeding of birds.
At the same time, to give full play to the social benefits of monitoring, protected areas that have installed monitoring facilities have also carried out a series of social science activities to promote bird habits and understand wild birds with the help of real-time monitoring methods. Slow live streams are carried out during important events like Wetland Day, Bird Day, and peak periods of bird migration each year.
