Harmony in Action: China's Synergistic Approach to Biodiversity and Climate Change

 COP15 Signals Positive Change: China's Bold Move to Drive Green Development Through Biodiversity

In recent years, China has increasingly emphasized the synergistic enhancement of biodiversity conservation and climate change mitigation. This means ensuring that actions taken to address climate change, whether in mitigation or adaptation, simultaneously protect biodiversity. The separation of these two aspects can be detrimental, such as inappropriate tree planting that may lead to the destruction of local native tidal wetlands or large-scale cultivation of a single species that could result in the loss of biodiversity.

On January 11, 2021, the Ministry of Ecology and Environment issued the "Guiding Opinions on Coordinating and Strengthening the Work Related to Climate Change and Ecological Environment Protection," emphasizing "promoting synergies" 5 times in this policy document, to promote coordinated effectiveness. In 2022, at COP15-2, the Chinese President proposed "promoting green development through biodiversity conservation" at the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (COP15). These are very positive signals.

On the civil society and academic side, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has carried out extensive work, including a survey conducted in 2022 by the national society titled "Survey on the Synergistic Enhancement of Biodiversity and Climate Change." This survey further promotes such work at the policy level. Additionally, dozens of "Low Carbon Workshops" (LCWs) have been established by CBCGDF to explore and encourage low-carbon and green development practices across various industries at the forefront.
