Acer pentaphyllum is a rare and endangered plant endemic to China. Before the 1980s, domestic and foreign scholars generally believed that the plant was extinct in its place of origin. It was not until 1982 that Chinese researchers accidentally discovered this species by the Jiulong River, a tributary of the Yalong River in Jiulong County, on the western slope of Gongga Mountain in Sichuan. Later, the distribution of this species was discovered in Yajiang County and other places.
At present, most of the rare and endangered Acer pentaphyllum are distributed in the dry valley area of the middle reaches of the Yalong River, including Yajiang County, Jiulong County, Kangding City and Muli County in Sichuan, and the number of population is very small.
In 2016, in order to strengthen the protection of Acer pentaphyllum, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) and the Maiji District Government of Tianshui City, Gansu Province jointly established the "Tianshui Acer pentaphyllum Relocation Project" in Jiaochuan, Dongcha Town, Maiji District, funded by the CBCGDF. (CBCGDF Acer pentaphyllum Conservation Area in Tianshui, CCAfa), and Mr. LU serves as the director of the CCAfa area, presiding over the conservation work of the species.
After years of hard work, in 2019, the CBCGDF Acer pentaphyllum Conservation area once again established the "Tianshui Acer pentaphyllum Conservation Research Institute" based on the previous conservation. In recent years, the reserve has cooperated with the local forestry school to study the key issue of low seedling emergence rate of Acer pentaphyllum seeds, and tested the Acer pentaphyllum's ability to survive in harsh environments such as drought and cold in the field.
CBCGDF Acer pentaphyllum Conservation area currently covers an area of more than 30 acres, with about 50,000 annual and biennial Acer pentaphyllum seedlings. Spring is coming, and Mr. LU is happy to donate seedlings and trial planting in places suitable for planting Acer pentaphyllum, and to participate in related projects such as biodiversity conservation and rural revitalization in areas suitable for the Acer pentaphyllum to let more people know about it.
Government departments, social welfare organizations and other units (not for individuals at the moment) interested in trial planting or incorporating the protection of Acer pentaphyllum into local biodiversity conservation and rural revitalization and other related projects are welcome to contact: v42@cbcgdf.org.
