The 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA 6) was held from February 26 to March 1, 2024 in Nairobi, Kenya. Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Vice President and Secretary General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), led a delegation from CBCGDF to participate in the conference. The conference's theme is "Effective, inclusive and sustainable multilateral action to address climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution".
The CBCGDF and BIODIVERSITY AND GREEN FOUNDATION, INC (BAG) co-hosted a Green Room event on the theme of "Neighborhood Biodiversity Conservation: Human-Centered Solutions to Nature's Crisis" at the headquarters of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) on February 27th, 2024, from 17:00 to 18:30 local time.
Ambrose Mbuvi, Social Enterprise Advisor of Yunus Environment Center, spoke on the topic of "Adopting Circular Business Models for Biodiversity Conservation".
He talked about the factors that contribute to the loss of biodiversity and the potential of circular business models for biodiversity conservation, especially concerning plastic pollution, from an economic perspective, before introducing the CirculaRise program and its impacts.
The CirculaRise project, implemented by the Yunus Environmental Center, aims to stimulate and facilitate the transition from a linear to a circular economy. The program supports businesses and enterprises to become more sustainable and resilient as they grow and expand through the design, iteration and implementation of circular solutions. To date, the project has been implemented in Kenya, impacting 25 businesses in the waste management, agriculture and agro-processing sectors across the country.
The project has created 280 new jobs, improved working conditions for 661 employees, and 23 social enterprises that have seen their revenues increase by at least 10%. 23 social enterprises have improved their access to the value chain. 23 social enterprises have met industry standards. 6 social enterprises have received funding.
The CBCGDF delegation will continue to bring you exciting messages from this environmental conference.
