Rallying Against Plastic Pollution: China's "Peoples vs. Plastics" Movement Gains Momentum | A Work Report (Sept 2023 - Feb 2024)

The "Peoples vs. Plastics"(人民战塑) project, initiated by the Reduce & Pick-up Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in Sept 2023, stands as a bottom-up environmental protection initiative. In response to the 2024 World Earth Day theme "Planet vs. Plastics," the project advocates for widespread public participation and social governance. It aspires to declare war against plastic pollution, reduce energy resource wastage, alleviate environmental pressures, and diminish the quantity of plastic waste on China's land, and along coastlines, rivers, and seas.

The overarching goal is to combat marine plastic pollution, improve the marine ecological environment, safeguard marine biodiversity, and contribute to realising the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This collective effort aims to foster a harmonious ecological society where humans and nature coexist seamlessly.

To the date of Feb 21st 2024, the project has made significant strides, spanning 12 cities across China and organizing 21 events, with activities taking place along 11 rivers, resulting in more than 500 kilograms of waste. Plus, multiple awareness promotion events were held in different places around the country. These include specialized garbage pick-up campaigns, engaging over 600 volunteers; and hundreds of other volunteers on regular patrols to safeguard clean waters.

Plastic originated from human needs and technological advancements, proliferating due to excessive use and the industrial civilization's relentless pursuit of efficiency. To truly end plastic pollution, the fundamental solution lies within humanity itself. Therefore, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation advocates addressing the plastic pollution crisis with a human-centric approach. The "People's vs. Plastics" project serves as a testament to the power of community involvement and underscores the importance of a united front in addressing environmental challenges. Through these endeavours, the initiative strives to create a sustainable, harmonious future where humanity and nature thrive.
