Harnessing Technology for Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development
In the ongoing efforts to enhance biodiversity conservation and promote green development, emerging technologies play a pivotal role, offering innovative solutions that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and data-driven approaches. Two notable initiatives by the CBCGDF (China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation) exemplify the transformative power of technology in addressing key conservation challenges.
The Yangtze River Basin in China has endured the scourge of illegal fishing, with one particularly troublesome and devastating method known as "electro-fishing." This method involves the use of electric shock to instantaneously kill or incapacitate all aquatic life in a given water area. The Anti-electrofishing Network, developed by CBCGDF volunteers, introduces a groundbreaking tool named "RiverEye" – an anti-poaching APP. This app empowers volunteers to capture photos, gather evidence, and identify fish species seamlessly. With just a click, they can report their findings directly to fisheries law enforcement authorities. Since its inception in 2017, this technology-supported initiative has made significant contributions to combating illegal electrofishing cases in China. Notably, in 2018 alone, the Anti-electrofishing Network assisted fisheries authorities in solving approximately 10% of the illegal fishing cases that the government successfully prosecuted.
In support of citizen scientists engaged in Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON), CBCGDF, as the 2nd Chinese data publisher to the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF), helps biodiversity infrastructure to publish species occurrence data from Chinese people and serve the undertakings of global biodiversity research and science-based policy. These data sets serve as a valuable resource for global biodiversity research and aid in shaping policies for conservation biology. By leveraging technology, CBCGDF contributes to a growing network of global biodiversity information, fostering collaborative efforts among citizen scientists and researchers in emerging technologies is crucial. The Anti-electrofishing Network and GBIF data publishing exemplify the positive impact technology can have in empowering communities, enhancing conservation efforts, and contributing to the global pursuit of a sustainable and biodiverse future.
