To Accelerate the Promotion of Efficient Water-saving Irrigation in Arid and Semi-arid Areas | CBCGDF Proposals to 2024 “Two Sessions”

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) held the “2024 Proposal Meeting for the Two Sessions” on February 1, 2024.The "Two Sessions" Proposal Working Group of CBCGDF welcomes active suggestions from all sectors of society to provide more high-quality suggestions for promoting biodiversity conservation and green development. The proposal titled " To Accelerate the Promotion of Efficient Water-saving Irrigation in Arid and Semi-arid Areas" is briefly shared as follows:

The dry climate and water scarcity in arid and semi-arid regions are one of the important factors that constrain the local socio-economic development in China. Especially in agricultural production, natural precipitation is difficult to meet crop growth needs. According to statistics, water consumption of agricultural irrigation in arid and semi-arid areas accounts for more than 85% of the total water consumption.

From the perspective of the effective utilization coefficient of irrigation water in farmland, there is still a lot of water-saving space in agricultural production in China. To accelerate the progress of agricultural water-saving construction, we recommend:

1.      To increase the construction of water-saving irrigation agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas from various aspects such as policy, technology, and management;

2.      To strengthen training for local growers, enhance their awareness of water conservation, knowledge and willingness of efficient water-saving irrigation;

3.      To try to build demonstration farmland for unified farmland management, and continuously break through the constraints brought by scattered farmland through the leading role of demonstration. At the same time, we can also rely on demonstration bases to strengthen publicity and training for other growers;

4.     To strengthen the data collection and disclosure of efficient and water-saving agriculture.
