Highlights of the Opening Ceremony on the 1st Day of the UNEA-6 | Reported by CBCGDF Delegation
On February 26, 2024, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), led the CBCGDF delegation to participate in the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in Nairobi, Kenya.
UNEA-6 focuses on how multilateralism can help tackle the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss, and pollution and waste.
In her opening speech, Ms. Leila Benali, the UNEA-6 President, pointed out that the UNEA-6 should focus on three turning points, which are major conflicts occurring around the world, historic elections in various countries and the opportunity to the restoration for multilateralism and human trust. This message was echoed by Inger Andersen, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme(UNEP). In addition, she also mentioned that the UNEA-6 will focus on multilateral environmental agreements, such as those involving climate, desertification, biodiversity, ozone layer, chemicals, etc.
At the plenary session, many regional groups welcomed the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF), the Global Framework on Chemicals (GFC) and the Marine Biodiversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction (BBNJ), with some calling for its speedy ratification. Many also welcomed the work of the Plastics Treaty Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC) on an international legally binding document on plastic pollution, scheduled to be completed later this year.
