To Guide the Transformation of the Fur Farming Industry and Promote the One Healthy and Green Development | CBCGDF’s Proposal to 2024 “Two Sessions”
The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) set up a “bridge” to gather voices from scientists and people to the country’s top legislative bodies for the “Two Sessions”, China’s most important political and legislative conferences in March 2024.
From the perspective of "One Health", fur farming has negative impacts on public health, environmental protection, animal welfare, and other aspects. Hereby, CBCGDF suggested that:
To assist in the transformation of the fur farming industry and support the development of other sustainable related industries that balance public health safety and ecological balance; And to introduce subsidy policies to assist personnel in the fur farming industry in transferring to other green industries for employment;
To regularly inspect the animals and personnel of China's fur farms to determine whether there are relevant pathogens, diseases or toxic pollutants, such as COVID-19 and avian influenza virus, to prevent large-scale transmission;
To gradually prohibit the breeding of susceptible species to zoonotic diseases (such as coronavirus) such as minks, as well as the import, export, transportation, and trading of live minks and their fur products;
To manage and treat the existing fur farms feces and other pollutants in compliance;
To provide education and publicity to fur industry personnel and the public to enhance their broader understanding of animal welfare, zoonotic diseases, public health (including biosafety), and environmental issues and risks related to fur farming, in order to further reduce market demand for fur products.
