Embracing Green Meetings! CBCGDF Delegation Observation at 6th United Nations Environment Assembly in Nairobi

On February 25, 2024, Dr Jinfeng Zhou, Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), led a delegation to Nairobi, Kenya, for the 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6), set to officially commence on February 26. The assembly's theme, "Taking Effective, Inclusive, and Sustainable Multilateral Action Against Climate Change, Biodiversity Loss, and Pollution," sets the stage for crucial discussions.

As part of the CBCGDF's engagement, a Green Room event focusing on biodiversity conservation is scheduled for February 27. The delegation is committed to bringing you highlights from this environmental summit.

During the major sessions on February 25, Secretary-General Dr Jinfeng Zhou observed a significant reduction in the use of disposable cups at the official meeting venue. Many representatives from countries and organizations enthusiastically responded to the assembly's call, bringing their reusable water bottles, and lanyards, and opting for a paperless approach to access event materials and information.

One notable example is a photo showing Dr Zhou's reused conference badge lanyard from a past event in Beijing, emphasizing the importance of small but meaningful actions in environmental conservation.

With a longstanding commitment to green development, CBCGDF advocates for active participation from all sectors in promoting green conferences and reducing the use of disposable cups and bottled water. As one of China's most influential social organizations, CBCGDF's Standardization Committee introduced the "Green Meeting Index" in 2019. This standard serves as a reference system for measuring the sustainability of events such as conferences and exhibitions, assessing aspects like food, accommodation, transportation, waste management, paper reduction, biodiversity, and energy consumption. The initiative promotes a lifestyle of simplicity, greenness, and low carbon footprint, discouraging extravagance and promoting responsible consumption.

Since its inception in 2019, the green meeting standard has been adopted by various organizations and conferences, including major events like the International Genome Conference and the China Computer Conference, with positive implementation results.
