Some Thoughts on Disagreeing with the Concept of " Biodiversity Net Gain" Proposed by British Expert | ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about the Fourth Civilization (279)

Recently, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), shared his views on the concept of "Biodiversity Net Gain"(BNG) proposed by a British expert. He disagrees with this idea and explained why as below:

I have seen a British real estate development project being promoted with the biggest highlight of "Biodiversity Net Gain", which claims to lead to a net increase in local biodiversity. However, why are we opposed to such a concept?

What the global joint efforts to do is slow down the rate of biodiversity loss, not to stop the loss of biodiversity, let alone to promote biodiversity growth. Why? Because the crisis we are facing is the accelerated loss of biodiversity and the sixth mass extinction. Is it possible to stop the biodiversity loss? I think it's impossible

Although some measures in UK real estate development projects may have some positive impact on local biodiversity, this does not mean that we can ignore the issue of biodiversity loss on a global scale. Globally, human activities remain the main cause of biodiversity loss, including deforestation, land use change, overfishing, and garbage pollution, etc. We should pay attention to these fundamental issues and take effective measures to slow down the rate of biodiversity loss. What we can do now is to slow down the rate of biodiversity loss, which will be the mainstay of our mission for most of the future.
