Al Gore Urges Global Action at China-US Air Purification Symposium hosted by CBCGDF

In March 2015, former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore, attended the "Sino-American Air Purification Symposium" held in Beijing at the invitation of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF). During the conference, he delivered a significant speech, delving into the intricacies of air pollution. Gore began by posing 3 crucial questions: Do we need to change? Can we change? Will we make the change?

With the rapid increase in carbon dioxide emissions, global temperatures continue to rise, and the threats posed by anthropogenic global warming are undeniable. Gore pointed out that since 2000, carbon dioxide emissions have equated to the energy released by exploding 400,000 atomic bombs, a staggering statistic.

Emphasizing the interconnectedness of local and global phenomena, he highlighted that changes at a local level would impact the entire system. Rising temperatures would lead to increased water vapor content in the atmosphere, triggering severe weather events such as heavy rainfall, floods, and landslides. Issues related to anthropogenic global warming, including land drought, rising food prices, forest fires, casualties, water shortages, and rising sea levels, cannot be overlooked.

Gore touched upon the potential of renewable energy, especially wind and solar power. He noted that countries like China, Australia, Germany, Hawaii, and Chile have successfully harnessed solar energy for electricity production, not only reducing costs but also promoting sustainability.

Furthermore, he advocated for the reduction and prohibition of coal combustion. Encouragingly, the consensus reached between China and the United States on implementing total carbon emission control and reduction plans signifies positive progress in their environmental cooperation.

Gore's speech profoundly inspired a heightened awareness of air pollution issues, emphasizing the urgency of global collaboration and awakening a sense of responsibility for sustainable development and environmental protection. The symposium organised by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) provided valuable insights and direction for the international community's joint efforts to address air purification challenges.
