Coupling Study of Surface Groundwater Change Patterns in the Tarim River over the Past 30 Years | Joint Study by the Research Department of CBCGDF
In recent decades, global warming has been intensifying, and the arid and semi-arid regions in northwest China have gradually shifted from warm-dry to warm-humid. Relevant observation data show that the once extremely dry Tarim Basin has experienced large-scale rainfall for many times. Under the global warming and humidification, what are the impacts of surface water changes in the Tarim River Basin on regional groundwater?
In response to the above question, researchers from
China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF),
School of Geoscience and Spatial Information Engineering, Hunan University of
Science and Technology, Aerospace
Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), and International Research Center for Sustainable
Development Big Data jointly analyzed the long-term variation pattern of
surface water area in the Tarim River Basin over the past 30 years utilizing
satellite remote sensing and hydrological model data, and taking the Lop Nur,
which has specific indicative significance for ecological environment changes
in the basin, as an example, analyzed the impact of surface water changes in
various water systems on regional groundwater reserves. The research paper "Analysis
of Surface Groundwater Changes in Xinjiang Tarim River Basin from 1989 to
2019" was published in “Geographic Science” in May 2023.
The results indicate that in the past 30 years, the
surface water area of the Tarim River Basin has shown a significant growth
trend; among them, precipitation is the main climatic factor causing changes in
the surface water area, while ecological water transport changes the spatial
distribution pattern of surface water bodies in the region. After 2015, the
intensity of groundwater loss in the Lop Nur area gradually eased. In the
future, as long as regional climate evolution, river ecological water
replenishment and groundwater exploitation intensity do not change
significantly, the groundwater level in the Lop Nur area will gradually recover.
This research has certain reference significance for the comprehensive
management of water resources in the Tarim River Basin and the restoration of
the ecological environment in Lop Nur and its surrounding areas under the
background of global climate change.
