Soaring Freedom: Successful Release of Rescued Birds in 2024 Baiyangdian Wetland Conservation Event, CBCGDF Voluneers Supporting Safe Wintering for Wild Birds

Winter is a challenging time, especially for non-migratory water birds and some resident birds. Volunteers from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in the Baiyangdian wetland area in Hebei province have noted that a significant proportion of the wild birds rescued during the winter are Eurasian Bitterns and Daurian Redstarts. With the increasing public awareness of wild bird conservation, birds facing food shortages or struggling for survival are brought to wildlife rescue centres. In nature, respecting the laws of nature is crucial, but once rescued, their destinies can be rewritten. In the spirit of giving them the best possible chance at life, local CBCGDF volunteers always find ways to provide assistance in such situations.

Recently, the first wetland release of the 2024 Baiyangdian Wetland Conservation event took place in the small wetlands north of the city. The participants included volunteers from the CBCGDF and Green Youth volunteers. During this event, they successfully released a Eurasian Bittern named "Tianya" and a Daurian Redstart named "Xuehua" back into the wild. "Xuehua" responded to the volunteers' farewells with high-frequency calls, while "Tianya" soared powerfully, conveying a message as if saying, "Don't worry, I can handle the remaining cold, patiently waiting for the warmth of spring."

There is also a Common Buzzard named "Yongchuang" that remains at the rescue station due to an ongoing healing issue on its right leg, wrapped in a bandage. However, once it recovers, it will soon join the next release at the lakes along with a Night Heron.

According to CBCGDF volunteers, this wetland conservation event marks the first of the year. In 2024, the local CBCGDF volunteer team plans to conduct a more systematic ecological survey of the small wetland communities, meticulously recording changes in the wetland and bird species numbers to contribute to the protection and restoration of the wetland ecosystem.

Local volunteers intend to actively participate in the ecological survey of the wetland ecosystem, providing detailed data and reports. Through these efforts, they hope to offer strong support for the conservation and restoration of biodiversity in the surrounding urban areas and emphasize the importance of artificial wetlands near Baiyangdian wetlands in Hebei Province.

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation firmly believes in a "Human-based Solution" (HbS) for biodiversity conservation. Over the past decade, more than 50,000 volunteers have been actively involved in biodiversity conservation and wildlife rescue across the country, contributing to the cause through the Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) initiative.
