From an Endangered-Species Reintroduction: The Establishment of China Milu Deers Foundation in 1985 | CBCGDF History Review

China, a land rich in biodiversity, has witnessed the resurrection of a unique species, the Milu Deers (Père David's deer), through the concerted efforts of the China Milu Deers Foundation and a lot of conservationists and entities. Over a century ago, these distinctive creatures faced extinction on their native soil. In a remarkable turn of events in the 1980s, the benevolent gesture of the Duke of Bedford family in the United Kingdom brought a gift of Milu Deers to China. This marked the beginning of a journey to revive a species that once roamed freely in the Chinese landscape. The visionary leadership of individuals such as Vice Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Lü Zhengcao, alongside Qian Changzhao and Baoerhan, resulted in the establishment of the precursor to the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), known as the then China Milu Deer Foundation (CBCGDF).

Historical Background:

In 1985, as a proactive response to the imminent return of the Milu Deers to their homeland, Lü Zhengcao, Qian Changzhao, and Baoerhan spearheaded the formation of the China Milu Deers Foundation. The foundation's inception was a symbol of China's commitment to the conservation and revitalization of its unique flora and fauna. The Milu Deers, also known as Père David's deer, held not just ecological significance but also cultural importance, embodying the resilience and spirit of China's natural heritage.

Inauguration and Leadership:

On May 6, 1986, in Beijing, the China Milu Deers Foundation officially declared its establishment and convened its inaugural board meeting. The foundation's leadership saw the election of Baoerhan and Qian Changzhao as honorary chairmen, with Lü Zhengcao assuming the role of chairman. This triumvirate of leaders reflected a blend of environmental stewardship and political acumen, demonstrating the importance accorded to the revival of the Milu Deers.

Vision and Mission:

The foundation's vision extended beyond mere preservation; it sought to create an environment conducive to the flourishing of the Milu Deers. The Milu Deers, with their unique place in Chinese natural history, were not merely a species to be protected but a symbol of China's commitment to sustainable ecological practices. The China Milu Deers Foundation aimed to integrate conservation efforts with public awareness and education, fostering a sense of responsibility towards the nation's biodiversity.

The establishment of the China Milu Deers Foundation stands as a testament to the nation's determination to reclaim its natural heritage. The journey from near-extinction to revitalization mirrors China's commitment to environmental stewardship. As the Milu Deers roam once again on Chinese soil, their presence serves as a living reminder of the harmonious coexistence between humans and nature. The foundation's leadership, with its foresight and dedication, has paved the way for a future where the Milu Deers thrive, embodying the resilience and vitality of China's ecological tapestry. Today, there are more than 11000 milu deers roaming in the China.
