Green Empowerment: CBCGDF Recommends Recognition of Consumer Rights in EU's UNEA-6 Draft Resolution on Circular Economy Acceleration

The upcoming 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) in February 2024 holds great significance, and the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), as an accredited organization to the UNEA, has been extended an invitation to contribute comments and input to the resolutions drafts.

On January 30, 2024, CBCGDF actively participated by providing input to the Draft UNEA-6 Resolution on Stepping up Efforts for Accelerating a Circular Economy Transition, proposed by the European Union and its Member States.

In this regard, CBCGDF emphasizes the importance of recognizing consumers' rights to embrace green consumption and make environmentally conscious choices. Consumers should wield the authority to reject business practices that contribute to pollution and wastefulness. The provided input underscores the need to incorporate the concept of "green consumer rights" into the resolution.

The current text in this Draft, as it stands, neglects this pivotal concept, and CBCGDF strongly advocates for its inclusion. Real-world scenarios, such as consumers being denied the use of reusable cups in coffee shops due to regulations favoring disposable cups, highlight the urgency of recognizing and protecting the rights of environmentally conscious consumers. This acknowledgment becomes crucial, particularly when consumers actively strive to minimize their ecological footprint.

The recommended inclusion aligns seamlessly with the overarching theme of environmental responsibility and sustainability. CBCGDF's input seeks to ensure that the resolutions drafted at UNEA-6 not only address the circular economy transition but also reflect a commitment to empowering consumers in making eco-friendly choices and fostering a greener, more sustainable future.
