CBCGDF Recommends Recognition of Waste Pickers' Contribution in EU's UNEA-6 Draft Resolution on Circular Economy Acceleration: They're Pioneers of Circular Economy and Environmental Renaissance

The 6th United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA-6) is set to convene in February 2024, and the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), as an accredited organization to the UNEA, has been invited to provide comments and input on its resolution drafts. On January 30, 2024, CBCGDF submitted the following input to the Draft UNEA-6 Resolution on Stepping up efforts for accelerating a circular economy transition domestically, regionally, and globally, proposed by the European Union and its Member States.

In its recommendations, CBCGDF emphasizes the significance of acknowledging the work of waste pickers as a valuable contribution to sustainable production and consumption. The foundation advocates for supporting waste pickers through global social policies, urging nations to consider measures such as tax exemptions, business registration waivers, and financial support tailored to small-scale or individual waste pickers.

The essence of CBCGDF's input revolves around the profound role waste pickers play in the urban landscape. Described as the unsung heroes contributing to the cyclical reuse of resources, waste pickers are portrayed as integral organisms essential for maintaining a healthy and clean city. Their presence is seen as a catalyst for multiple positive outcomes, including the advancement of a circular economy, environmental conservation, waste reduction, and the promotion of social equity through employment opportunities that require minimal skills.

The foundation underscores the importance of respecting the rights of waste pickers, drawing a parallel between their role in environmental governance and the decomposers in nature, such as ants and vultures. Waste pickers efficiently transform waste into resources, acting as a cost-effective force without imposing financial burdens on taxpayers. CBCGDF contends that inadequate waste recycling is a significant contributor to chemical pollution, emphasizing the potential for the waste picker issue to address a crucial bottom-up aspect of environmental management.

As the UNEA-6 approaches, CBCGDF's input highlights the necessity of recognizing and supporting the pivotal role waste pickers play in creating a sustainable and environmentally conscious global community.
