Guardians of Biodiversity: People's Daily Report on the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - June 13, 1992 | Biodiversity History Research

Editor's note: I have always been intrigued by the early history of the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and the mainstreaming and dissemination of the concept of biodiversity in China. Consequently, I have delved into numerous historical archival materials to trace the footsteps of the past. As the 15th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP15) convenes in Kunming, China in 2021, a new global framework for biodiversity protection post-2020 is set to emerge, garnering unprecedented attention for the international convention in the Chinese-speaking world. How was the situation when the global community signed this convention in 1992? The author delves into media reports from the early 1990s, revealing historical nuances hidden in the details, allowing readers to catch a glimpse of that era.

Notably, the author observes a difference in translation compared to today. In June 1992, the People's Daily referred to the convention as "The Convention for the Protection of Biodiversity." This nomenclature can be found in several articles: "Signing Ceremony for <The Convention for the Protection of Biodiversity>" on June 8, 1992 (6th edition), "China Decides to Sign <Framework Convention on Climate Change> and <The Convention for the Protection of Biodiversity>" on June 12, 1992 (6th edition), and "98 Countries Approve the Convention on Biodiversity, While the United States Refuses to Sign" on June 2, 1992 (7th edition). However, by November 8, 1992 (4th edition), the term had unified into the familiar "Convention on Biological Diversity."

"Guardians of Species: A Sacred Responsibility"

(Reporter: Xie Lianhui)

A collective action plan—The final text of the "Convention on the Protection of Biodiversity" has recently been approved in Nairobi. The world is now focused on information about the signing of this crucial document by leaders attending the United Nations Environment and Development Conference in Brazil.

Expectations are high for the realization of this collective action because the destruction of biodiversity affects every individual on Earth, and everyone has a responsibility to use resources in a sustainable manner. As the country with the world's largest population and vast territory, China has been committed to the sacred work of biodiversity conservation...

(Please note: Given the increasing international attention to the governance of biodiversity, the author believes it is necessary to translate this past article into English for research and reference within the international community.)
