CBCGDF Community Conservation Areas (CCAfa) for Chinese Honeybees - Ecological Treasure at Tongbai Mountain: Native Bees Nurturing Local Biodiversity

In 2017, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) established the "Community Conservation Areas for Chinese Honeybees at Tongbai Mountain, Henan Province, China. This initiative supports local beekeepers in safeguarding the native Chinese honeybees roaming freely in the deep mountains, creating a unique ecological haven for the local community. Despite facing numerous difficulties and challenges in recent years, this community-driven biodiversity conservation area and the freely roaming Chinese honeybees continue to protect the local ecosystem.

As of January 26, 2024, according to the latest updates shared by local beekeeper Liu Hongcheng and Linda Wong, Deputy Secretary-General of CBCGDF, we witness the thriving health of the mountainous ecosystem and the flourishing population of Chinese honeybees.

Tongbai Mountain, stretching approximately 100 kilometers across Henan and Hubei provinces in China, with its main peak being Taibai Peak, serves as the source of the Huai River. Situated at the geographical boundary between northern and southern China, Tongbai Mountain boasts rich biodiversity.

In the deep valleys and cliffs of Tongbai Mountain, Chinese honeybees have nested their home, becoming guardians of the local ecology. These mountain bees, freely roaming, not only provide abundant honey sources for the locals but also play a crucial role in the ecosystem. By collecting pollen and nectar (from diverse flowers), they facilitate plant pollination, maintaining the healthy growth of vegetation in the mountainous region. The formation of this ecological chain contributes to the balance and stability of Tongbai Mountain's ecosystem.

Increasing scientific evidence indicates the significant role played by local bees (pollinators) in sustaining local ecosystems. It can be said that this Community Conservation Area for Chinese Honeybees is not only for the reproduction and thriving of bees but also for the protection of local biodiversity. The unique geographical and climatic conditions of the Tongbai Mountain region have nurtured many distinctive plant and animal species. The presence of Chinese honeybees adds a vibrant touch to this ecological paradise.

Beekeepers here are not just laborers harvesting honeycombs but also stewards of the environment. They practice sustainable beekeeping methods, such as free-range beekeeping, ensuring the health of both honeybees and the surrounding ecology. This approach to neighborhood biodiversity conservation makes beekeeping a sustainable industry, meeting the demand for healthy honey while preserving the integrity of the ecosystem.

The establishment of the Community Conservation Area for Chinese Honeybees is not only an innovation in traditional beekeeping but also a practical implementation of ecological civilization. Within this conservation area, beekeepers and honeybees together construct a harmonious ecological community, adding a touch of lush greenery to the landscapes of Tongbai Mountain. It is not just a paradise for Chinese honeybees but also a harmonious place where humans and nature coexist. We look forward to more people understanding the benefits of this traditional beekeeping method and envisioning a future of ecological and economic prosperity.

Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) is a global biodiversity solution designed to mitigate the rapid loss of biodiversity through people-centered approaches. As an innovative initiative for biodiversity conservation in the era of ecological civilization, "Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood" is a people-engaged solution, encouraging active contributions from the public in reducing biodiversity footprints in daily life, engaging in nature conservation, and actively contributing to the achievement of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As of Jan 2024, over 210 community conservation areas have been established to carry out Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON). BCON)" has been recognized as one of the global solutions for nature at the 2023 Paris Peace Forum.
