Call on the E-Commerce Platform to Stop Illegal Sales of Wild Conophytum|CBCGDF Clean Internet for Conophytum

Recently, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) received a letter from volunteers reporting that some merchants on the Pinduoduo e-commerce platform are selling conophytum from their production areas in their live streaming channel. The cultivation and maintenance of horticultural conophytum required plenty of time, therefore, driven by interests, poachers illegally harvest wild Conophytum, leading to a sharp decrease in wild populations. Nowadays, all species of the Conophytum have entered Appendix III of the CITES Convention.

Due to the characteristics of cross-border rare species, Conophytum has been hyped up and highly sought after, becoming a target for illegal poachers to collect and sell at high prices on online platforms. These illegal pickings have led to a rapid decrease in Conophytum in South Africa, with some species even completely extinct.

The Clean Internet for Conophytum (CIC) initiative is a conservation endeavor initiated by the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), a leading Chinese conservation group and an IUCN member founded in 1985. The initiative aims to combat illegal wildlife trade, particularly the transnational plundering and illicit trade of succulent plants, by purifying online trading platforms. Launched on March 9, 2023, the CIC action has garnered widespread support and engagement from the public, conservationists, horticulturists, and businesses. By late 2023, about 120 articles for awareness promotion have been published, and an Environmental Public Interest Litigation (EPIL) has been filed against suspected organised wildlife crimes.
