What are the key barriers or risks to scaling the BCON in the future, and how to overcome them?

Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood (BCON) promotes inclusive participation in nature protection and restoration, across all parts of the landscape, and all members of society. BCON, proposed in 2021 by Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, General Secretary of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF), is an approach that encourages protection of biodiversity in people's daily life and activities.

The main obstacles and risks encountered by BCON in the past three years include but are not limited to: The development and expansion of the predatory industrial civilization and local enterprises that thrive on excessive waste of natural resources; The construction of many projects requires huge ecological investment. For example, during the construction process of parks, the use of project funds is not scientifically justified, without  participation and guidance of scientists, but is guided by pursuit of profit, causing large-scale and often irreparable damage to the environment;The publics understanding, acceptance and implementation of BCON concept is a long educational process.

Main Ways to overcome obstacles include but are not limited to:

Communication and transparency are always key;  BCON promotes the publics awareness of biodiversity conservation and changes in relevant laws and regulations. Furthermore by working in partnership we can develop joint solutions and overcome problems together;

Specific measures include but are not limited to:

BCON requires biodiversity assessments for all projects; BCON requires the establishment and enforcement of biodiversity laws; BCON access universities, middle schools and primary schools in carrying out awareness building and training to let young people know BCON; BCON prosecutes companies that typically damage biodiversity and the ecological environment to deter other companies; BCON publicly criticized detrimental projects under in process and will halt them.

Any project encounters challenges, but by listening and engaging BCON hopes to continue to generate appropriate solutions.
