The CBCGDF International Department Held a Working Meeting on the Protection of Far Eastern Curlew

On the morning of December 13, 2023, the International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) and CBCGDFs OceanWetlands Working Group jointly held a working meeting to discuss the conservation status of Far Eastern Curlew, its current international conservation policies, and possible contributions to the future species action plan.

The Far Eastern
Curlew (Numenius madagascariensis) is a large shorebird most similar in appearance to the long-billed curlew, but slightly larger. It is mostly brown in color, differentiated from other curlews by its plain, unpatterned brown underwing. It is not only the largest curlew but probably the worlds largest sandpiper. Its breeding habitat is composed of marshy and swampy wetlands and lakeshores.

As of 2006, the global population of Far Eastern Curlew was estimated to be about 38,000 individuals.
Its status was upgraded to “vulnerable” on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2010. In 2016, it was upgraded again to “endangered”. In October 2016, Bradnee Chambers, then Executive Secretary of the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS), visited China to communicate with the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation on the protection of migratory species such as Far Eastern Curlew.

In Australia, its status is “critically endangered” under the country’s Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act. In China, the species has been listed as a national second-class key protected wild animal.
