CBCGDF Anti-food Waste Project Research: Over One-fifth of the Food is Wasted | What Other Measures Can We Take to Prevent Food Waste?

The China Ministry of Agriculture issued ‘The 2023 China Food and Nutrition Development Report’. It shows the food supply in recent years has steadily increased.

According to recent statistical data, in the year 2022, the average daily energy supply per person in China will be 4871 kcal, representing a 3.9% increase over the past five years. Additionally, the average daily protein and fat intake per capita will be 176.1 grams and 146.2 grams, respectively, representing an increase of 6.6% and 5.2% over the past five years.

(From CBCGDF)

The food loss and waste rate in China is 22.7%. Most of this waste happens at the beginning and the end of the food production process. About 76% of the total waste happens at the consumer end and the production and post-production part.

According to the researcher, three types of food products have relatively high waste amounts and rates. The first is vegetables, which have a waste rate of around 35%. The second category is fruits, which also have a high waste rate of around 20% due to their high water content and difficulty in storage. The third category is grain, which has an overall loss and waste rate of more than 10%.

China has made significant strides in reducing food loss and combating food waste in recent years. This has been achieved through the introduction of related legal systems, strengthening infrastructure construction and promoting loss reduction technology. Researchers believe that establishing a national-level food loss/ waste monitoring and evaluation system will benefit the development of relevant research and promotion of work. Additionally, it is recommended that residents adopt a reasonable diet, which can not only reduce food waste but also ensure good health.
