CBCGDF Chemical Working Group Research on the Adverse Effects of Omethoate, Carbofuran, Methomyl and Aldicarb on Human Body
Recently, the Ministry of Agriculture of China banned the use of four highly toxic pesticides in China. Include omethoate, carbofuran, methomyl and aldicarb. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Chemicals Working Group investigated and studied these four chemicals.
Omethoate is a systemic organophosphorous insecticide. Excessive doses of omethoate will inhibit acetylcholinesterase enzymes in the nervous system, leading to excess acetylcholine at nerve terminals. And will cause acute cholinergic symptoms including nausea, vomiting, weakness, paralysis, and seizures.
Carbofuran is a carbamate pesticide, that inhibits cholinesterase, that is, it overstimulates the nervous system and causes nausea, dizziness, confusion, and, if exposure to a very large amount (such as in an accident or major spill), will cause respiratory paralysis and death. Besides, carbofuran has been found highly toxic to freshwater and estuarine/marine invertebrates.
Methomyl is an n-methyl carbamate insecticide. Similar to Carbofuran, it can cause nausea, dizziness, confusion and, exposure to a very large amount (such as in an accident or major spill), will cause respiratory paralysis and death, if humans are exposed to methomyl through the mouth, skin, or inhalation.
Aldicarb is also a carbamate insecticide, likewise Carbofuran and methomyl, it has been considered acutely toxic to humans. It will inhibit the cholinesterase and cause various symptoms such as result weakness, blurred vision, headache, nausea, tearing, sweating etc.
These insecticides were also been considered a threat to the environment. They can be detected in groundwater, which might cause leaching and will be highly potential threats to estuarine/marine invertebrates.
