Summary of the Incident of Wasting Fresh Produce at the Trash Station

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) Biological and Scientific Ethics (BASE) Working Group is always concerned about food security and waste classification issues. On October 31, 2023, during the investigation, it was discovered that a community garbage classification station chopped fresh cabbage into pieces and used it as food waste. Then the video of the incident was published on the "China Biological Rescue and Scientific Ethics" WeChat official account and CBCGDF Media Integration" was released on Bilibili and TikTok platforms.

Immediately, China Xiaokang Network and Beijing News reported this incident, which aroused great concern and discussion from different aspects of society, and many social media reported on it.

On the evening of November 1, 2023, the Department of the Community responded quickly, announced the results of the investigation and issued a statement of the incident, saying that it had interviewed the company involved, instructed it to conduct self-examination and rectification, and dealt with the person in charge of the waste classification and launched investigations into all communities within its jurisdiction.

As an accidental incident discovered by the people, "Chopping fresh produce to make food waste" has attracted widespread attention and discussion. Although the original intention of some places on garbage classification is good, there are currently some problems with garbage classification and kitchen waste in some places. To achieve the recycling target, we should be aware of the practices that are deviated from reality.

In this incident, the community involved responded to the concerns of the masses and conducted a rapid response and investigation. Moreover, the incident has also led to a more comprehensive implementation of garbage classification policies.
