Critically Endangered Species Cycas szechuanensis Appeared in CBCGDF Conservation Area in Taishan | CBCGDF CCAfa

On December 17, 2023, Mr. LIU Yueyao, the director of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), happily shared some photos of Cycas szechuanensis taken in the Taishan Conservation Area. There were 7 adult Cycas szechuanensis and more than 30 seedlings of different sizes scattered around.

Cycas is originated in the late Carboniferous period of around 300 million years ago and is veritably a “living fossil”. During the Quaternary Ice Age, species extincted on a large scale. Due to the natural barriers of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and the Qinling Mountains, some of the Cycas in Sichuan, Yunnan, and other regions have been preserved in China. However, most wild Cycas are currently on the verge of extinction due to destruction of their native environment, over-exploitation, and low reproductive capacity. As early as 1999, China listed all species of the Cycas genus as national first-level protected wild plants, and the protection level has not changed since then.

Cycas szechuanensis is a species endemic in China and listed as critically endangered species in the IUCN Red List of Endangered Species. It was not until 1999 that a relatively concentrated wild population of Cycas szechuanensis was first discovered in Tanglang Mountain, Nanshan District, Shenzhen. At that time, Cycas szechuanensis were included in the first batch of national key protected wild plants.

The Cycas szechuanensis population in Taishan was first discovered by Mr. LIU Yueyao at the end of 1988 at Dashankou in Guanghai Town. Since then, he has been guarding the Cycas szechuanensis in Taishan, conducting regular patrol every month, and later assisted researchers in carrying out conservation and monitoring work in this area.
