Christmas Day Surprise with 3 Eurasian Whimbrels! CBCGDF Expert's Birdwatching Journey Records

On Christmas Day - Dec 25th 2023, amidst the festive atmosphere, Mr. Guo Geng, an expert from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), had a delightful encounter with three Eurasian Whimbrels on Jiuzhou Island in Zhuhai, China. These charming birds, native to the Arctic—the homeland of Santa Claus, added a touch of enchantment to the holiday spirit.

The Eurasian Whimbrels, members of the vast Scolopacidae family, boast a body length of 43-46 centimeters, featuring distinctive black markings on their crowns and long, gracefully curved bills. They inhabit a variety of environments, including marshes, shallows, and wet grasslands, preying on invertebrates, crustaceans, small fish, and insects. These whimsical birds construct their nests in ground hollows, contributing to the vibrant ecosystem around them.

In the spirit of sharing the wonders of biodiversity, the GBIF Working Group of the CBCGDF is set to publish this biodiversity occurrence data on the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF). This bottom-up approach to contributing biodiversity data aims to support global biodiversity policies by providing bioinformatics into the diverse fauna inhabiting different regions of the world.

As we share this occurrence on GBIF, we not only celebrate the beauty of these Eurasian Whimbrels but also contribute to a global initiative fostering a deeper understanding of our planet's rich biodiversity. The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation continues to play an active role in promoting sustainable practices and contributing to the global conversation on biodiversity conservation. May this festive encounter serve as a reminder of the interconnectedness of our world and the importance of preserving its natural wonders!
