Heartwarming Rescue: Injured Great Bustard Finds Shelter in Hebei's Winter Chill with CBCGDF CCAfa Rescue

On December 3, 2023, amidst the freezing temperatures and heavy haze in Tangshan, Hebei province, a heartwarming incident unfolded in Yangjiazhuang Village, Tangjiahe Town, Leting County. Local resident Zhang Ximing stumbled upon an injured "big bird" in his backyard during the evening, prompting him to make a call to the Tangjiahe Town police station.

Responding promptly to the report, local police contacted Gu Jiandong, the head of the Leting County Wildlife Conservation Association. Upon learning that the injured bird was a Great Bustard, a nationally protected species, Gu Jiandong, along with volunteers, braved the late hours and rushed to Yangjiazhuang Village. They successfully retrieved the injured bird, transporting it to the Daqinghe Rescue Station in Leting County and the Community Conservation Areas for birds of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) that same night.

Upon receiving the injured Great Bustard, Mr. Tian Zhiwei, a CBCGDF volunteer and the station's manager, conducted a thorough examination. The bird exhibited injuries to its left wing and chest, likely exacerbated by a period of malnutrition, rendering it extremely weak. Swift medical intervention and a timely supply of electrolytes helped nurse the Great Bustard back to health. Presently, the bird is reported to be recovering well.

According to Mr. Tian, the rescued Great Bustard is a mature male, approximately four years old. To facilitate its speedy recovery, Mr. Tian has strategically placed it alongside another previously rescued female Great Bustard for companionship and rehabilitation. Once both birds are fully recovered, the Community Conservation Area plans to release them back into their natural habitat, contributing to the conservation efforts of these magnificent creatures. The heartwarming rescue underscores the dedication of local volunteers and the vital role played by wildlife conservation organizations in protecting endangered species.
