Pangolins, Wild Boars and Cattles: New Issues and Opportunities in the Forestry and Grassland Economy | ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about the Fourth Civilization (276)

Pangolin scales are used as a medicine material. I saw a scientific survey stating that there were about 100,000 pangolins in only Hunan province 20 or 30 years ago, but it is no longer possible now. There are a total of 8 species of pangolin in the world, and 4 in Africa. Nowadays, pangolins in Africa are also being extensively utilized. The pangolin in Africa and the pangolin in China are not the same species or even the same genus. This general use and poaching caused by market demand will have an impact on the sustainable development of the forestry and grassland economy, which we believe is an issue that should be treated with great caution in the development of the forestry and grassland economy.

In 2021, I saw a news report that the issue of wild boar hunting will become increasingly important. The reproductive ability of wild animals in nature is very strong. After we carry out strong protection, they will lose their natural balance and bring ecological disasters. Humans are a very important species controller between humans and nature. Some disasters may also occur after humans stop hunting. How do we respond to these disasters? This is also a new issue with the forestry and grassland economy, and it will also create new opportunities for the forestry and grassland economy, which requires us to make reasonable planning and control and need us to consider in our future work.

We are undertaking a very arduous task to achieve the goals of “carbon peak and carbon neutrality”. As a developing country, China provides a large amount of products to the world, but the carbon emissions during the production process remain with us. Therefore, we propose that the assessment of carbon emissions should be based on consumption, and the products produced and exported should not be included in our carbon emissions. This viewpoint is still controversial internationally, however, regardless of the situation, the carbon emissions of various industries, including the cattle-centered industry in the forestry and grassland industry, are also very huge, and the scale of these industries will tend to decrease as the world pursues the health of people and the planet.
