CBCGDF BCON Suggests Adding " Prevention and Control of Light Pollution” to the “Management Measures for Urban Parks (Draft for Comments)”

Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development of China issued the “Management Measures for Urban Parks (Draft for Comments)” and has publicly solicited opinions from the society to promote the development of urban parks and improve urban ecology and living environment. The Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood Working Group (BCON) of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) organized research and discussion, and put forward 8 suggestions on the draft.

The fifth suggestion is call for adding content of the “prevention and control of light pollution" in the “Management Measures for Urban Parks ".

Light pollution has a significant negative impact on urban ecological environment and biodiversity; therefore measures must be taken to effectively prevent it. Light pollution not only makes star and astronomical observations difficult, but also disrupts the life rhythm of wildlife, and affects human physical and mental health such as sleep rhythm. It is also a waste of energy.

Incorporating content of the “prevention and control of light pollution" in the “Management Measures for Urban Parks” can help ensure the ecological health of urban parks and improve the sustainability in the urban environment.
