UNFCCC COP28 – CBCGDF delegate Dr. Monaco joins Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Roundtable on “Closing the Loop” with Gunter Pauli

On December 5, Dr. Edoardo Monaco, delegate of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) to COP28, was invited to join an Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week Special COP28 Roundtable entitled “Closing the Loop: Advancing Circular Practices in the Petrochemical Industry” chaired by visionary environmental entrepreneur and economist Gunter Pauli.

Pauli presented once again a very compelling case for the “blue economy” that he has championed for years and, more broadly, for a sustainable future that is actually not only most desirable, but also actually achievable – as Pauli’s global undertakings can now consistently prove (www.zeri.org).

Entrepreneurs play a major role in meeting the sustainability challenges of our time, by effectively turning them into opportunities. Yet, a shift away from the traditional “core business - core competence" model and the full harnessing of science, innovation and a broad set of diverse but complementary competences, are essential, so as to ultimately look at processes systemically and identify value in what is (often in large proportions) traditionally overlooked or, even worse, discarded - from tea/coffee brewing’s biomass leftovers to stone dust waste of mining operations, up to stranded petrochemical crackers.

The event brought together extremely relevant voices from a wide array of sectors and regions, including, among others, Elena Scaltritti (Chief Commercial Office at Topsoe - particularly interesting her concept of “value circle”, rather than mere “value chain”); Badr Al Olama (Chairman of Emirates Post Group and board member at Yahsat, Shuaa Capital, Yas Holding); Massimo Falcioni (Chief Competitiveness Officer at Abu Dhabi Investment Office); Ali Al Dhaheri (Chief Executive Officer at Tadweer Abu Dhabi Waste Management Company); Benjamin Longstreth (Global Director, Carbon Capture at Clean Air Task Force); Valerie Aillaud-Peyre (Director, Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week, Masdar).
