CBCGDF Participates in Chongqing “Protect Birds and Power Lines” Action
Chongqing Dazu Longshuihu Wetland Park in Chongqing Dazu County is one of the nationally protected wetlands. Near the pylons of 500kV lines under the jurisdiction of State Grid Chongqing Ultra High Voltage (UHV) Company, the lake is often inhabited by more than 20 species of rare birds such as Leucogeranus, Egretta garzetta, Anser cygnoides, Aix galericulata and etc. Thousands of migratory birds fly from the north to the south or from the south back to the north during spring and autumn. Many of them choose Dazu Longshui Lake as a stopover.
In 2023, the company established the ”Coexistence of Bird and Line” working group and proposed a “combination of blocking and sparing” ecological measures for bird protection. Installation of the new anti-bird equipment under the ultra-high voltage grade transmission line tower protection area will not harm the birds but can let the birds stay away from the dangerous region through physical occupation, and reduce the impact of bird activities on line operation at the same time. While in the tower's non-protection area or peripheral area, by building artificial bird's nests, scientific bird attractions etc., the working group avoided the occurrence of accidents caused by birds.
In April this year, the company also invited the relevant experts from the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) to conduct research. During the period, they inspected the main bird-related line sections in Chongqing, conducted the on-site investigation and learned about the nesting, distribution and living conditions of birds around the transmission lines. This investigation covered 20 towers, involving 6 bird nests. Based on the biodiversity perspective, the company has carried out a total of five training activities to improve the ecological knowledge of birds protection.
