The Indo-Pacific Humpback Dolphins, in China, also known as the "Giant Panda of the Sea," is a rare and large marine mammal that inhabits the tropical and temperate coastal waters of the Western Pacific and the Eastern Indian Ocean. Although it is primarily found in saltwater, it has also been spotted in freshwater rivers such as the Yangtze River, Minjiang River, Chiu-lung River, and Zhujiang River. This species is considered a national first-level protected animal in China. In 2021, it was included in the appendix of the United Nations Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals (CMS).

In 2016, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) in collaboration with the Blue Ribbon Marine Conservation Association, initiated the "Mermaid's Safe Harbor" project intending to protect and rescue cetaceans, with particular emphasis on the Indo-Pacific Humpback dolphin. The project's second phase has recently concluded. During this phase, the project disseminated over 4,200 manuals on aquatic wildlife protection and assisted approximately 8,000 public members in raising awareness of protecting aquatic wildlife.
