Dealing with Invasive Alien Species and Restoring Native Species | ZHOU Jinfeng Talks about the Fourth Civilization (272)

I recently went to Guangxi Province to conduct a research on Sporobolus alterniflorus and mangroves. Sporobolus alterniflorus has been identified as an invasive alien species, and a lot of effort and funding are put in to solve the problem of it. But during my research, I can clearly see that Sporobolus alterniflorus does not directly kill mangroves. In fact, we can see a large amount of Sporobolus alterniflorus growing on the beach reduces soil erosion and decreased the pressure of artificial greening.

The migration of species has been ongoing since the existence of life. Some seeds are brought by birds, while many seeds are brought by humans, such as Sporobolus alterniflorus. As long as it does not cause major harm to our production and life, we can let nature take care of it and adhere to the principle of harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

In order to protect mangroves, a large number of mangroves are being replanted in some areas. There are also many scientific issues that need to be studied here. Should this area be replanted? Should it be replanted or not? In many cases, it should be treated cautiously.

I came across a place during my research, and the scientist who took me there explained that mangroves have never grown in this place, but modern scientific technology has been used to make them grow. This approach is fundamentally incorrect. Whether it is a beach, mudflat, or a port where rivers enter the sea, they are all important natural ecosystems. It is not necessary to grow mangroves for a place to be an important ecosystem. If we use our amazing science to plant mangroves on the beach, it would be a significant damage to the original beach ecosystem. What we need to do is to restore mangroves in areas where they have been damaged.

The theme for World Wetlands Day 2023 is "It's time for Wetlands Restoration". We can develop the economy and strengthen tourism, but when it comes to intervention measures, we must be careful. We should take restoration as the main policy.
