CBCGDF-BCON: Urban Parks should Pay Attention to the Protection and Preservation of Natural Wilderness

Image
Recently, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has issued a notice on the public consultation on the “Measures for the Management of Urban Parks (Draft for Comments)” to widely solicit opinions, promote the development of urban parks and improve the urban ecology and human environment. The “Biodiversity Conservation in Our Neighborhood” Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF-BCON) responded positively to the call, and after serious discussion, put forward 8 suggestions in total for reference in its scientific decision-making. The following   is   [Recommendation 8 ].   [Recommendation 8 ] “Measures for the Management of Urban Parks (Draft for Comments)” should clearly reflect that urban parks should pay attention to the protection and preservation of natural wilderness.   [Reason] (1)  Wilderness is a treasure of natural biodiversity, containing precious plant and animal species. At the same time, wilderness is also a na

CBCGDF Anti-food Waste Project Research: Over One-fifth of the Food is Wasted | What Other Measures Can We Take to Prevent Food Waste?

Image
The China Ministry of Agriculture issued ‘The 2023 China Food and Nutrition Development Report’. It shows the food supply in recent years has steadily increased. According to recent statistical data, in the year 2022, the average daily energy supply per person in China will be 4871 kcal, representing a 3.9% increase over the past five years. Additionally, the average daily protein and fat intake per capita will be 176.1 grams and 146.2 grams, respectively, representing an increase of 6.6% and 5.2% over the past five years. (From CBCGDF) The food loss and waste rate in China is 22.7%. Most of this waste happens at the beginning and the end of the food production process. About 76% of the total waste happens at the consumer end and the production and post-production part. According to the researcher, three types of food products have relatively high waste amounts and rates. The first is vegetables, which have a waste rate of around 35%. The second category is fruits, which also have a hi

Ecological Assessments should be Conducted before Urban Light shows to Prevent Light Pollution | CBCGDF BASE

Image
In recent years, light shows, as a unique way of celebration and performance around the world, have increasingly appeared in people's lives. The light pollution problems they have caused have also quietly spread, becoming a potential threat to the ecological environment. Recently, the Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee (BASE) of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) learned an official statement from the SEO/BirdLife, in which they pointed out that "light pollution" not only exacerbates the occupation of ecological space and the threat to biodiversity, but also leads to significant energy consumption and environmental impacts.   The impact of light pollution is not limited to interfering with the biological clocks of humans and animals, but also has a deeper impact on the wild animals such as birds and insects and the entire ecological balance.   The SEO/BirdLife has made a series of calls aimed at slowing down the s

Zhou Jinfeng on Field Biodiversity Research at Tonglushan Ancient Copper Mine Site in Daye, Hubei Province

Image
On December 28, 2023, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng, Secretary-General of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), led a research team to conduct biodiversity research at the Tonglushan Ancient Copper Mine Site in Daye City, Hubei Province. Located approximately 3 kilometers southwest of the urban area of Daye City on the south bank of the middle reaches of the Yangtze River, Tonglushan is an ancient mining and metallurgical site centered around mining and smelting remnants. During the research, Dr. Zhou Jinfeng and his team documented Elsholtzia loeseneri Hand.-Mazz., commonly known as "Tongcao flowers”(铜草花). The unique relationship between Tongcao flowers and mineral resources is profound and distinctive. Tongcao flowers, as a special plant, thrive in soils rich in copper elements and are closely related to copper mines. In ancient times, when mining technology was underdeveloped, Tongcao flowers played a crucial role in locating copper mines. Their uniq

In order to study the path to the management of human-canine conflicts, the 4th "Legal Issues in the Management of Human-Canine Conflicts" seminar of the first Animal Rule of Law Forum was held online on the afternoon of December 23, 2023. Professor Sara Platto, Secretary General of the Biological and Scientific Ethics Committee (BASE) of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) was invited to participate in this webinar at which she delivered a keynote speech titled "European Legislation on Pets' Abandonment". In her speech, she introduced relevant legislation on animal protection in European countries, mentioning that in Europe, although cats and dogs are the most common daily companion animals for humans, the EU still does not have a common regulation, but each country has more or less its own national legislation to provide protection for these pets. For example, many countries have corresponding laws and regulations agai

Ice and Snow Covered Rivers and Grounds in Northern China. Most Migratory Birds have Flown South|CBCGDF Bird Status Bulletin

Image
If they don't want to freeze and starve to death in the wind and snow, migratory birds can only migrate long distances to the south. Since mid-December 2023, China's largest winter cold wave has invaded from north to south. Wherever the big cold wave goes, temperatures have plummeted, forcing migratory birds that go to the south to spend the winter to speed up their migration. At present, most of them have basically reached relatively warm wintering habitats. The big cold wave around the winter solstice (December 22) is caused by the rapid movement of strong cold air from the Arctic or Siberia. In the short term, It swept from Heilongjiang, Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, Qinghai, Ningxia and other provinces in northern China to the North China Plain, the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River, and cross the Nanling Barrier. In the north, the temperature in the coldest Mohe area once reached minus 52.3 degrees. In the northern wilderness, dripping water turns into ice, and riv
