The Tenth Session of the Governing Body of ITPGRFA Concluded Successfully in Rome on Nov. 24, 2023 | CBCGDF Delegates Report

The tenth session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA) concluded successfully on November 24, 2023 at the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Rome, Italy. Approximately 400 participants gathered, representing governments, intergovernmental organizations, international agricultural research centers, farmers’ organizations, civil society, and the private sector.

As an observer to ITPGRFA, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has sent delegation attending the 5-day conference and congratulated Dr. Kent Nnadozie on the extension of his appointment.

The final day of the meeting concluded without major disagreements. Discussions focused on cooperation with the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD), as well as the interconnection between the ITPGRFA Working Group on Strengthening the Multilateral System (MLS) and the CBD Genetic Resources DSI Benefit Sharing Working Group. Representatives have decided to convene a special technical expert group on farmers' rights and first reach an agreement on its scope of authority.

Plenary unanimously elected Mr. Alwin Kopše from Switzerland as Chair of the eleventh session of the Governing Body (GB 11), which is scheduled to be held in the last quarter of 2025.

The session highlighted the need to ensure close collaboration with the CBD, following adoption of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework and its Decision 15/9 on benefit-sharing from DSI on genetic resources.
