Sustainable Development of Wetland Park and Forest and Grassland Economy | Zhou Talks the Fourth Civilization ( 269)

On November 19, 2023, Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), was invited to attend the "2023 Boao Conference on Forest and Grass Economic Development in China" held in Hainan Province, sharing the views and topics related to wetland park and forest and grass economy.

Dr. ZHOUs statement is summarized as follows:

Wetland park is also an important part of tourism and forest and grass economy. Before the construction of a forest wetland park, there were 40 to 50 species of birds, including endangered species. After the planning and construction, there are only 3 to 5 species of birds in the artificially planned construction area. This comparison is enough to prove that the construction of such forest wetland parks is contrary to the concept of the fourth civilization.

In the original wasteland, many kinds of grass grew freely. After the construction of the forest wetland park, it became a kind of artificial grass, and there was only one kind of grass, and a large number of birds lost its survival basis. There are also many small bugs living in the wasteland; after the construction of the forest wetland park, the number of insects has decreased a lot. Bird populations have also plummeted.

Many people speak of the greatness of forest and grass economy, but forest and grass economy may also bring damage to the ecological environment. Including the cultivation of medicinal plants and cash crops, they are closely related to the forest and grass economy, and also have extremely important ecological value, but how we further develop them in a sustainable way is a very important issue.

At international conferences, we often hear international experts ask us that the forest coverage rate of Madagascar was more than 90% 20 or 30 years ago, but now it has dropped below 20% in just 20 or 30 years. The loss of forests on such a large scale and the desertification of the land in such a short period of time have caused enormous damage to local biodiversity. It has been suggested that the decline in forest cover in Madagascar is linked to the dramatic increase in demand for rosewood. Similar to the development of forest and grass economy, we should be vigilant and very cautious.
