A Report by CBCGDF Xianhu Cycad Conservation Area in 2023

In April 2021, in order to protect the population of the cycad (Cycas revoluta Thunb.) around Xianhu, Taishan city, the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) urgently established a conservation area named the CBCGDF Xianhu Cycad Conservation Area. Since then, CBCGDF volunteers have kept on taking good care of these rare wild cycads. 

Since the first patrol work after the new year was carried out on January 30, 2023, volunteers have conducted many patrols to check the growth of cycads under the leadership of Director Liu of the CBCGDF Xianhu Cycad Conservation Area, and the cycads are growing well by far.

During the patrol, the rangers also discovered the Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm., a national second-level protected plant.The Cibotium barometz (L.) J. Sm. originated in the Jurassic and is the most senior plant "living fossil" in the virgin forest. It is listed as a national second-level key protected wild plant. Fortunately, Taishan locals do not like to use this plant as bonsai, and it is not a mainstream medicinal plant. It has not been excavated on a large scale and is only used in small quantities. The biggest threat is that the habitat is contracted out to plant economic forests. The survival of the species has been greatly affected.
