Occurrence Data of Tachypleus tridentatus in Xinying Bay, Hainan Province Released on Global Biodiversity Information Facility
In mid-November 2023, the GBIF Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) published the occurrence data of Tachypleus tridentatus on the Global Biodiversity Information Network (GBIF), which observed and recorded by CBCGDF expert, Mr. Guo Geng, in Xinying Bay, Danzhou, Hainan Province.
Tachypleus tridentatus, commonly known as the Chinese horseshoe crab or tri-spine horseshoe crab, is mainly distributed in the coastal areas of Fujian and Guangdong in China. In July 2019, the Tachypleus tridentatus was calssified as the Endangered (EN) species in the Red List of International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).
The shape and size of horseshoe crabs have basically remained unchanged in its 400 million-year history, and they are called “living fossils”. Like other species of horseshoe crabs, T. tridentatus is an omnivore and feeds on molluscs, worms, other benthic invertebrates and algae. They mainly inhabit the sandy bottom of shallow seas and like to live in estuaries with low salinity.
