CBCGDF BCON Working Group | Eliminating Hazard on the Route to Welcome Over 200 Ciconia boyciana Back to the Yellow River’s Path

Wintering is a critical part of the annual life cycle of migratory waterbirds. As temperatures plummet, more birds fly to the south. During a recent patrol on the west side of the old Yellow River channel in Dongying Hekou District, the staff of the State Grid Shandong Dongying Power Supply Company discovered a group of about 200 Ciconia boyciana hovering in the air and walking on the riverside, which was truly spectacular.

The old course of the Yellow River in Dongying, Shandong Province is located in the Yellow River delta area. This region boasts estuary siltation and the most complete preserved estuarine new wetland ecosystem in the warm temperate zone worldwide. These natural geographical conditions make it an important habitat on the Eastern Asia-Australasia, Northeast Asia interior and Western Pacific Rim migratory bird migration routes. The Ciconia boyciana, which travels between its breeding grounds in northern China and its wintering grounds in the south every year, undoubtedly finds this wetland as one of the best stopping and wintering options. Since Ciconia boyciana was first found breeding on an abandoned telegraph pole in the Yellow River Delta Reserve in 2003, they have been observed successfully breeding on a telegraph pole in 2005 again. With the improvement of the ecological environment and the increase in the number of poles and towers suitable for nesting and breeding of Ciconia boyciana, more and more Ciconia boyciana choose to breed in Dongying. According to statistics, there are currently more than 2,000 Oriental white storks born in the Yellow River Delta.

This year, the State Grid Dongying Power Supply Company has further strengthened the management of "Line-Bird Harmony" and continuously studied and mastered the activity habits and characteristics of the Ciconia boyciana. It has also increased the observation and research of bird activities under special geographical environments. The company has implemented the management ideas and plans of "occupying the upper part, blocking in the middle, and covering the lower part", and continuously optimized and upgraded the bird protection measures related to transmission line poles. With the arrival of the migratory birds in autumn and winter this year, power grid staff are fully prepared. Without affecting the activities of the birds, they have taken measures to occupy and cover the transmission lines around the Oriental White Storks and other measures to ensure the safety of both birds and lines.
