CBCGDF Suggests Monitoring New Pollutants such as Microplastics

The Office of the Shanghai Ecological Civilization Construction Leading Group recently issued an announcement to publicly solicit opinions on the "Implementation Opinions on Comprehensively Promoting the Construction of Beautiful Shanghai and Building a Modern International Metropolis in Harmony with Nature (Draft for Comments)".The International Department of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) actively responded to the call, organized serious discussions and research, and put forward 6 suggestions for decision-making reference, and the 6th recommendation is as follows:

It is recommended to include in the paragraph “Strengthening solid waste and new pollutant management” about monitoring of new pollutants such as microplastics and antibiotics.

Reasons:

1. The "14th Five-Year Plan Ecological Environment Monitoring Plan" issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment in early 2022 aims to establish a comprehensive, scientific, authoritative, and efficient ecological environment monitoring system. It includes monitoring various aspects of environmental quality such as carbon, atmosphere, water, soil, oceans, new pollutants and etc. The "Implementation Opinions on Comprehensively Promoting the Construction of Beautiful Shanghai and Building a Modern International Metropolis in Harmony with Nature (Draft for Comments)" for comprehensive promotion of a beautiful city is consistent with the goals of the plan, aiming to make cities more beautiful and livable.

2. New contaminants species such as microplastics and antibiotics have been detected in water, soil, sediment, air and other media, and the ecological risks they bring cannot be ignored. Since the substances may have adverse effects on the natural ecosystem and human health. Regular scientific monitoring of concentrations will help to take effective environmental protection measures to ensure ecological safety, environmental quality and public health.
