Second day of the Tenth Session of the Governing Body of ITPGRFA | CBCGDF Delegates Report in Rome, 21 November, 2023

November 21, 2023 is the second day of the tenth session of the Governing Body of the International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (ITPGRFA), which is being held in Rome, Italy for 5 days (Nov. 20 to 24). As an observer to ITPGRFA, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has sent delegation to attend the conference on site.

 


On the second day, delegations continued the discussions on the theme of enhancing the ITPGRFA’s Multilateral System (MLS) of access and benefit-sharing. Following discussion on the Funding Strategy, Global Information System (GLIS), and conservation and sustainable use of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture (PGRFA), delegates also focused on farmers’ rights.

In the morning, delegates made discussions about the decision made in the 15th Conference of the Parties (COP) to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) on 7-9 December 2022, which established a multilateral mechanism for benefit-sharing from the use of DSI on genetic resources. The CBD representative reported on progress achieved in the first meeting of the CBD Working Group on DSI and expressed the importance of collaboration with the ITPGRFA.

 



The Secretariat introduced the report on implementation of the Global Information System (GLIS) and presented relevant documents including the background study on bottlenecks and challenges to the implementation of Articles 5 and 6 of ITPGRFA.
