Controversies: Discussion on Confirmation of the Chinese Translation of “Ecosystem restoration” in New Synthesis Report by UNEP and FAO

Image
Recently, the synthesis report “Becoming #GenerationRestoration: ECOSYSTEM RESTORATION FOR PEOPLE, NATURE AND CLIMATE” released by UNEP and FAO on the occasion of the launch of the “United Nations Decade of Ecosystem Restoration” in 2021 and has received positive responses from all sectors of society. To better promote ecosystem restoration work, researchers and volunteers translated the document into Chinese.   (The cover of the synthesis report in Chinese, from UNEP, FAO) In the title of the document, the word “restoration” in this document was translated as “修复” in Chinese. In the main body of the report, the word “restoration” is mostly translated into“恢复”, but some are using “修复” , which means “repairation” in a more appropriate way. These two words are not exactly the same in Chinese, and makes researchers and volunteer translators get confused. Broadly speaking, in Chinese, “Ecological Repairation” means the artificial repairs to damaged or destroyed ecosystems, emphasis on int

CBCGDF Deputy Secretary-general had an Online Discussion with Researchers from the Shanghe County Natural Resources Bureau about Educational Base for Science in Shanghe

Image
Shanghe County is located in the northernmost part of Jinan City, with a total area of approximately 1,162.6 square kilometres and a total forest area of 11,000 hectares. Since 2010, Shanghe County has begun large-scale artificial breeding of white moth Zhou's wasps, and all the bred bees have been released in various districts and counties in Jinan. Artificial physical and biological control measures have been adopted to effectively reduce the use of pesticides, protect regional biodiversity, and promote ecological micro-balance. (From Yan Jiahe) Mr. Yan Jiahe of the Shanghe County Natural Resources Bureau introduce d , over the past 10 years, more than 230 species and 1.917 million insects have been identified at light-induced monitoring points. In the process of pest control, spraying measures are highly important. Precise spraying and drones  are adopted, and broad-spectrum pesticides will not be used when unnecessary. In terms of scientific research, Yan actively investigate

Occurrence Data of Critically Endangered Species Calidris pygmaea in Danzhou Bay, Hainan Province Released on Global Biodiversity Information Facility

Image
In Nov.16, 2023, the GBIF Working Group of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) published the occurrence data of Critically Endangered Species Calidris pygmaea on the Global Biodiversity Information Network (GBIF), which observed and recorded by CBCGDF expert, Mr. Guo Geng, in Danzhou Bay, Hainan Province.   The Calidris pygmaea is a small wader which breeds on the coasts of the Bering Sea and winters in Southeast Asia. They nest in June–July on coastal areas in the tundra, choosing locations with grass close to freshwater pools.   The most distinctive feature of Calidris pygmaea is its spatulate bill. They often move alone in shallow water and on soft muddy ground. As they walk, they often lower the head down and extend the bill into the water or mud. When feeding, they always sweep back and forth or from side to side underwater or in the mud. Insects, insect larvae, crustaceans and other small invertebrates are mainly their food.   Data

CBCGDF Fenglin Black Bear Protected Area Volunteers Conducted a Patrol Activity

Image
Recently, CBCGDF Fenglin Black Bear p rotected area volunteers conducted a patrol activity. The volunteers drove 50 kilometers to the Fenglin Black Bear Reserve. During the patrol, they retrieved the infrared camera that had been placed deep in the mountains.   During the patrol, volunteers said: "The increase in wild animals shows that the ecological environment has been effectively improved . B ut there is   still  a long way to go to protect wild animals." In the future, volunteers will continue to stay on the front of patrols and conduct in-depth research on the living conditions and protection strategies of wild animals. At the same time, they will further expand patrol coverage and make greater contributions to wildlife protection. TIAN Yuzao: Problem of Aral Sea Drying up

Image
Recently,  having been authorized by professor DIAN Yuzao, the OceanWetland platform of the China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation(CBCGDF) reposted his article titled   P roblem   of  A ral  S ea  D rying   up , first released in 1990. The drying up of the Aral Sea and related factors are cumulative, affecting the economic activities of the three countries ,  Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, and Kazakhstan, involving many sectors and fields of industrial and agricultural production and infrastructure construction. The drying up of the Aral Sea did not occur overnight. It is the inevitable result of economic development activities in Central Asia and Kazakhstan for more than half a century. It is also the concentrated manifation of the multi-dimensional interconnection of the "human-society-nature" system in the desert area. There are profound social reasons for the drying up of the Aral Sea. Original article:https://mp.weixin.qq.com/s/1yaX6qJQCW0nq1U2TB_TRw
