The Impact of Climate Change on Polar Ice Layers | CBCGDF Climate Change WG

It is crucial to address these trends and take effective measures to mitigate climate change and its impacts on polar sea ice. International cooperation and efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions are essential to preserve these fragile ecosystems and stabilize the global climate. The Climate Change Working Group of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has been paying close attention to relevant research for a long time and will carry out promotion for real actions at the UNFCCC COP 28.

According to recent scientific data, there has been a significant impact of climate change on polar sea ice in the past three years. The Arctic has experienced a warming rate that is 3.7 times higher than the global average during the past 40 years. In 2022, the overall average temperature in the Arctic was 1.10℃ higher than the long-term average. While the temperature changes in Antarctica have been comparatively smaller, the Antarctic Peninsula is still warming at a rate higher than the global average.

In addition, the extent of sea ice in Antarctica has undergone a rapid decrease after a long period of slow growth. In 2022, the Antarctic sea ice extent was 23.84% and 2.96% below the long-term average, with the summer sea ice reaching its lowest recorded scale.

These data indicate that the polar ice caps are undergoing rapid changes. The melting of glaciers, sea ice, and ice sheets not only poses a threat to local ecosystems and biodiversity but also has far-reaching effects on the global climate system. Furthermore, the melting of polar ice contributes to rising sea levels, which endangers coastal communities and ecosystems.
