CCAfa208|Community Conservation Area for Dark Sky•Liuba Officially Established

On October 19, 2023, the unveiling ceremony of the Community Conservation Area for Dark Sky• Liuba of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation was held at the fifth National Science Popularization Education Conference in Huoshaodian Town, Liuba County, Shaanxi Province.

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng, Secretary-General of China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF), attended the conference and awarded the Community Conservation Area. It is the 208th member of CBCGDF Community Conservation Areas System (CCAfa).

Huoshaodian Town, Liuba County, Hanzhong City, Shaanxi Province, is located in the core area of the “Qinling Mountain Stargazing Belt”, is the core of the “dark sky belt” between Xi’an and Hanzhong, with the development of dark sky tourism environment, industry and other advantages. The town has a small population and scattered villages. These conditions provide important support for dark sky tourism - less light damage caused by human activities, a good night environment, and better stargazing conditions. According to the Portell classification, the town's global dark sky level is between 2-3, and the visual magnitude can reach 7.0 or more.

Dr. ZHOU Jinfeng visited the "Qinling Rural Observatory" built in Huodian town, and listened to its introduction.

Huoshaodian Town is located in the southern foot of the Qinling mountains, surrounded by mountains, lush vegetation, and with a pleasant climate. Its average altitude is about 1100 meters; and its forest coverage rate is more than 92.03%. It is rich in negative oxygen ions and dark sky resources. It has the innate natural conditions for establishing the community conservation area. On a sunny day, people can not only enjoy the dark sky map composed of dozens or even hundreds of stars, but also catch shooting stars across the sky.

In addition, the conservation area is also very rich in species resources, there are a variety of rare wild animals and plant resources.

After the establishment of the CCAfa 208 in Huoshaodian Town, the following protection plans will be vigorously promoted: 1. The Qinling Rural Observatory will be built in Huoshaodian Town from 2023 to 2024 to provide a high-quality astronomical observation address for more astronomy enthusiasts; 2. Planning, transforming and managing outdoor lighting in strict accordance with international standards to prevent and control light pollution; 3. From 2023 to 2024, the whole area of Huoshaodian Town will be renovated to continuously improve the ecological environment.
