CBCGDF Submitted Suggestions on Enabling Data-Sharing in Offshore Renewable Energy Development

On October 23th, China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has proposed suggestions to the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition on Enabling Data-Sharing in Offshore Renewable Energy Development.

This document outlines a set of key takeaways and recommendations to help governments, companies, and data platforms enable greater sharing of ocean data, specifically data collected by the ORE industry.

Suggestions on Enabling Data-Sharing in Offshore Renewable Energy Development are as follows:

Recommendation 1: Make full use of biodiversity information from global public databases, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF).

Many companies and institutions around the world are increasingly focusing on how to better share biodiversity data. Long-term cost savings can be achieved by leveraging existing biodiversity information from earlier data collection efforts before projects such as environmental impact assessments (EIA) are undertaken. Such data can not only provide evidence about the occurrence of specific species in specific places and dates, but also help to better understand the natural heritage that existed before the project area. GBIF has done a lot of work in data collection. Therefore, the implementation of the data sharing program in the development of offshore renewable energy can work directly with the GBIF to obtain data for free. CBCGDF also recommended that the United Nations Global Compact Ocean Stewardship Coalition enter into a partnership with GBIF.

Recommendation 2: Not only a best practice, but also a list of worst practices to alert and motivate all parties concerned is needed to better improve Marine data sharing; in addition, we suggest coordinating across borders to support informed decision-making and better ocean management.
