Shining a Light on China's Night Sky: The CBCGDF's Journey in Dark Sky Conservation

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) is a leading organization in China dedicated to the protection of the night sky and the prevention of light pollution. Since its establishment in 2015, the CBCGDF's Star Sky Working Committee has been tirelessly working to promote the cause of protecting the night sky in China. In 2016, the committee initiated a series of activities, including the development of night sky protection standards and the establishment of pilot dark sky parks.

The organization took a significant step by spearheading the construction of China's first dark sky protection area in the western regions of Tibet's Ali and Nagqu. Additionally, it designated three locations, including the "Seven-Color Rainbow" Scenic Area in Zhejiang's Kaihua County, as the first batch of expanded pilot dark sky protection areas in the country.

In recognition of their outstanding contributions to the cause of protecting China's night sky, Mr. Wang Xiaohua, the former head of the CBCGDF's Star Sky Working Committee, was honored with the "Crawford/Hunter Lifetime Achievement Award" by the International Dark-Sky Association in 2017.

In November 2019, the "First Chinese Dark Sky Protection Area Conference" was held in Yelu Marsh, Yancheng. This event marked a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to protect China's night sky.

In 2021, with support of lawmakers, the CBCGDF once again demonstrated its commitment to the cause by submitting a political motion to the annual National People's Congress and the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference. The proposal urged the establishment of legislation to accelerate the prevention of light pollution. The goal was to create practical and effective legal regulations tailored to China's specific circumstances, making it possible to combat light pollution systematically and contribute to the achievement of the country's dual carbon goals.

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation has played a important and cosistent role in raising awareness about the importance of preserving the night sky, preventing light pollution, and advancing the cause of dark sky protection in China. With their continuous efforts, they have not only made significant progress in creating dark sky areas but have also earned international recognition for their dedication to the cause. As China grapples with the challenges of environmental conservation and sustainable development, the CBCGDF is working hard for a greener and more environmentally conscious future.
