Health Risks Caused by Cheap Wooden Flooring | CBCGDF One Health Research

Nowadays, due to cost saving considerations, some units and individuals tend to blindly lay cheap and inferior wooden flooring. The installation of cheap wooden flooring can be associated with potential health issues. These concerns arise mainly due to the quality of materials used and the possible presence of harmful substances.

Low-cost wooden flooring may be manufactured using substandard or chemically treated wood. These materials often contain high levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as formaldehyde, which can be released into the indoor air over time. Prolonged exposure to VOCs can lead to respiratory problems, eye irritation, allergic reactions, and even cancers like leukemia.

Cheap wooden flooring might also not have undergone proper treatment to prevent mold, fungal and pests growth. This can result in the accumulation of moisture within the flooring, leading to the development of mold and mildew. Breathing in mold spores can cause respiratory issues and allergies, particularly for individuals with pre-existing conditions.

From a larger perspective, low quality wood flooring with inferior wood can lead to excessive consumption of forest resources and cause damage to the ecological environment. Chemical substances and dyes used in the production process may enter water sources and cause serious pollution. Low quality wood flooring may also have a shorter lifespan and are prone to damage or wear. This will lead to more frequent replacement and disposal, increasing the amount of waste generated.
