CBCGDF's Consistent Efforts in River and Lake Biodiversity Conservation & Ecological Connectivity

The China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) has been actively involved in efforts related to river and lake health assessment. Here's a summary of some the key projects and efforts over the past 5 years:

1. Policy Advocacy: As a 1st class national scientific society, CBCGDF has provided policy recommendations on river and lake health decisions, aiding relevant authorities in making informed choices. For instance, the "OceanWetlands" working group offered four suggestions on the local standard "Technical Guidelines for the Monitoring and Assessment of River and Lake Aquatic Ecological Environmental Quality" in Beijing. They also submitted six feedback recommendations regarding the implementation opinions on strengthening river and lake management in Beijing, which successfully led to the inclusion of benthic organisms to enhance river and lake habitat diversity.

2. Specialized Platform: CBCGDF established the "OceanWetlands" professional platform, which serves as a hub for wetland and marine scientists. It fosters scientific communication related to river and lake biodiversity, contributing to global environmental governance. The platform has become a vital communication hub, serving over 5,000 tech experts.

3. Support for Events: The "OceanWetlands" working group supports various events, such as the River and Lake Ecology Forum, National Algae Control and Water Ecology Restoration Seminar, and the Water Ecology Environment Recovery Key Technology Application and River and Lake Long-term Information Technology Construction Seminar.

4. Biodiversity Surveys: They conduct surveys to assess aquatic biodiversity. For instance, they initiated a rapid biodiversity survey in Baiyangdian in March 2017, aligning with the development strategy of the Xiongan New Area, which prioritizes ecological and sustainable development.

5. Research Collaborations: CBCGDF collaborates with scientific research institutions on projects like the Zhunai Lake Wetland and Lop Nur investigations. They have organized numerous research initiatives and field surveys, analyzing the potential impacts of dam breaks on the Three Rivers Source Ecological Barrier, among other concerns.

6. International Support: Their international motion on ecological connectivity conservation in the post-2020 global biodiversity framework gained approval at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in 2021.

7. Ecological Principles: CBCGDF introduced the "Four Principles of Ecological Restoration" and the "Three Axioms of Environmental Governance" to guide the scientific restoration of rivers and lakes, emphasizing the importance of authentic ecological engineering and a cautious approach to prevent practices that harm ecosystems under the guise of ecological restoration.

8. Standard Development: The foundation has published several standards related to river and lake health assessment, including the "Biodiversity Restoration Standard" (T/CGDF 00031-2022) and other national standards.

These efforts by CBCGDF underscore their dedication to the conservation of river and lake ecosystems and the promotion of scientific research, policy advocacy, and ecological restoration in this critical domain.
