The Interpretation of the Theme of ICCOP 2023 (6)

2023 International Climate Conference of People Forum (ICCOP 2023) is going to be held by China Biodiversity Conservation and Green Development Foundation (CBCGDF) on September 3rd, 2023, during 2023 China International Fair for Trade in Services (CIFTIS). This conference aims to empower individuals and communities to actively participate in mitigating climate change and creating a sustainable future for all. The theme of this forum is “Dual Carbon Goals and Environmental Services”.

Carbon capture and storage (CCS) plays a critical role in achieving the dual carbon goals of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and combating climate change. It usually refers to industrial technological means. CCS is a series of technologies that involve capturing CO2 emissions generated by industrial processes or power plants, transporting them to suitable sites, and securely storing them underground.

CCS services contribute directly to the dual carbon goals by offering a viable solution for reducing CO2 emissions. By capturing and storing CO2, CCS helps prevent the release of significant amounts of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, thereby contributing to the mitigation of climate change. This technology offers a practical way to address emissions from large-scale industrial operations and power plants, which are key contributors to global CO2 emissions.

The successful implementation of CCS services can enable industries and power sectors to significantly reduce their carbon footprints. As countries strive to meet their carbon-related targets, CCS provides a crucial tool to achieve deep decarbonization in sectors that are difficult to electrify or transition to alternative energy sources. It allows for the continued use of fossil fuels while effectively reducing emissions, especially during the transition period towards a more sustainable energy mix.

However, it's important to note that CCS should not be seen as a standalone solution for achieving the dual carbon goals. It should be complemented by other measures like energy efficiency improvements, renewable energy deployment, and sustainable land use practices. A comprehensive approach that combines multiple strategies will generate the greatest impact in combating climate change and building a sustainable future.
